FRONT DERAILLEUR ADJUSTMENTS Ever find yourself looking at your front derailleur and wishing that it performed better? If only you knew how to adjust it, you could silence that grinding noise. Well, tuning your front derailleur is as easy as pie once you learn a few basic tips. Here they are:

Step 1-A: Clamp the derailleur so the outer cage sits 1–3mm above the big ring’s teeth. Relax cable tension and make derailleur position adjustments by raising or lowering the frame clamp. Recheck step 1-A.

Step 1-B: With the chain in the middle ring, apply cable tension until the derailleur cage is above the big ring. The flat section of the cage’s outer plate should be parallel to the ring.

Step 2: New Shimano derailleurs are shipped with a white, plastic Pro-Set that positions the cage so Steps 1 and 2-A can be made without cable or hand tension. The high and low adjustment screws are often labeled.

Low stop: Shift to the large cog and granny. Loosen the front derailleur cable clamp. Turn the low adjustment screw so the clearance between the derailleur cage inner plate and the chain is 0–0.5mm.

Top adjustment: Position the shifter’s barrel adjuster 1 turn out and re-clamp the cable. Shift to the big ring and top cog. Adjust the high screw so the clearance between the chain guide outer plate and the chain is 0–0.5mm.

SIS adjustment: Shift to the large cog and onto the middle ring. Use the shifter’s barrel adjuster to position the inner cage plate 0–0.5mm from the chain. Twisting the adjuster out moves the cage outward.

Forget Shimano’s 0–0.5mm spec: We often set the low stop so the clearance between the inner plate and chain is a more spacious 1–2mm. Granny shifts will be easier and the derailleur will still keep the chain railed.
